Business targets
To ensure competitive advantages of rolled steel, the company’s scientists are developing a technology to produce ultrafine-grained hot-rolled steel with high mechanical properties.
One of the ways to increase the strength of structural rolled steel products is to grind its microstructure to an ultrafine-grained state. This approach is the most attractive from an economic point of view, since it allows increasing the level of mechanical properties of steel without adding expensive alloying elements.
Implementation features
To produce hot rolled products with an ultrafine-grained structure, it is necessary to select the optimal modes of thermal deformation during hot rolling taking into account the features of the equipment.
For this purpose, physically based computer models are used to predict evolution of the microstructure during controlled rolling, as well as a series of physical experiments to simulate hot rolling using the Gleeble thermomechanical simulator.
Ultrafine-grained steel technology is being developed for a modernized hot rolling mill at the Belgian site at La Louvière.
