Zinc-aluminium-magnesium (ZAM) coating with micro alloying and high corrosion resistance.
Business targets
The R&D team is implementing a project to develop and master a new type of coatings based on zinc, aluminium and magnesium.
This coating will increase the volume of flat structural steel products produced by NLMK Group by 20%.
Compared to existing zinc coatings, zinc-aluminium-magnesium coatings double the corrosion resistance, which makes it possible to build reliable and durable steel structures. At the same time due to the use of a patented technology applying ZAM makes it possible to maintain adhesion of the coating to the strip during bending and stamping.
The new product is used in construction and automotive industries. In particular, it will reduce the weight of the applied coating per strip. This leads to a reduction in the mass of structures which reduces the cost of constructing buildings and manufacturing machines.
Implementation features
To implement the project, computer simulation of the processes of applying this type of coating was required.
Selection of technological parameters that will allow correct coating and high-quality final product obtaining has become very important.
Digital models were actively used as a tool to achieve the above. A special hydrodynamic model was created at NLMK Group, which made it possible to estimate how much zinc, aluminium and magnesium remain on the strip during continuous deposition through the melt in the bath. Thus, it is possible to optimize the process of loading ZAM-semis into the melt in such a way as to obtain a composition with fluctuations of less than 0.1% of the required one.
Effect
An analysis of key consumers, their requirements, and an assessment of the potential market size showed that the new technology can increase the company’s total revenue by 1.3 % per year
